Sveti Petar u Šuma, today the municipality of the same name, was named after the Benedictine monastery, which in Latin documents is called Monasterium Sancti Petri in Sylvis - Monastery of St. Peter in Šume. The monastery was first mentioned in documents in 1174 with a vague note that it had existed for fifty years, but it is certain that the monastery existed before 1134. Legend has it that in Sv. Hungarian King Salomon stayed in Petra in Šuma after he was overthrown from the throne in dynastic struggles. Later he moved to the monastery of St. Mihovil na Brijeg, near Pula, where he died in 1089.
