PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK: Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest and largest national park of the Republic of Croatia. With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, so it was declared the first national park in Croatia on April 8, 1949. The process of sedimentation, which forms travertine barriers and creates lakes, represents a unique universal value for which the Plitvice Lakes received international recognition on October 26, 1979, by being included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In order to cover the catchment area of the Plitvice Lakes, the borders of the National Park were expanded in 1997, and since then the Park occupies an area of slightly less than 300 km2. The Park is mostly covered by forest vegetation (81%), a smaller part is covered by grasslands (15%) and areas changed by anthropogenic activity (3%), and water bodies occupy only slightly less than 1% of the Park's surface. The lake system of the Plitvice Lakes consists of 16 named and numerous smaller, cascaded lakes. Due to the geological base and characteristic hydrogeological conditions, the lake system is divided into Upper and Lower lakes. Prošćansko jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino jezero, Gradinsko jezero, Burgeti and Kozjak are the twelve lakes that make up the Upper Lakes, formed on impermeable dolomites. The Upper Lakes are more spacious, more indented and have gentler shores compared to the Lower Lakes, formed in a permeable limestone substrate, cut into a narrow canyon of steep slopes. The lower lakes consist of Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod. The Plitvice Lakes system ends with the imposing Sastavci waterfalls, at the foot of which the Korana River begins.
